Wildflower

"I tell myself,
I am a wildflower."

Wildflower.

Beautiful, resilient, free, unintentional, and blooming boldly in color. I grow in places where I was not meant to be planted, yet I thrive without human intervention. I paint the hillsides with color, I grow in fields of wide expanses, I am unique and I am rare. In a garden of delicate species, I grow strong and undefined; I am a wildflower.

A Beautiful Storm

"I will destroy you in the most beautiful way possible. And when I leave you will finally understand, why storms are named after people."

A beautiful storm.

When storms brew and when they unleash, what they will leave behind is largely unknown. Growing up in New Jersey, I've lived through my fair share of storms - from hurricanes to tropical storms to flash hail storms the size of golf balls, and the annual winter storm or record-breaking blizzard. I've seen storms that have left behind great disasters, and I've also seen storms that have left extreme beauty in their wake. The greatest storms are remembered by name and they leave behind legacies that, even after many years pass, are hard to forget. My earliest recollection of a hurricane was Hurricane Floyd that hit in 1999, and I was only 7 at the time. More recently, the East Coast was devastated by Hurricane Sandy and just last year we were buried in snow from winter storm Jonas. Like people, all of these storms had an identity and all of them were extremely unique. Like people, the major storms that we live through in our lifetime are ones we don't forget. We remember them by name because they are a part of our life's story. Sometimes storms coming whirling through our lives and they hit hard - knocking the breath out of us and pulling the carpet right out from under our feet. We struggle to recover from them, but ultimately we stand resilient. Other times, the storms that blow into our lives come with a quiet but great magnitude, and we walk outside to join the storm...to relish in its beauty and the aftermath.

For A Moment

"I would like to be the air that inhabits you for a moment only. I would like to be that unnoticed and that necessary."

For a moment.

With Valentine's Day being tomorrow, I thought the colors in this outfit would fit the bill for the occasion. I'm not actually one to really do the pink or red outfit for Valentine's Day because that's just not really me {plus, I really dislike wearing the color red}. It's odd - the older I've gotten, the less I've felt the desire to really be swept up in the "romantics" of Valentine's Day. Sure, all the bells and whistles that are part of Valentine's Day are nice, but is it all really necessary just because society has declared this holiday the day to celebrate love? In my opinion, love and romantics should be celebrated everyday and it's probably more thoughtful to do these things on a random day for no other reason than just because. I'm not saying to not take the day to show your person that you care about them and you love them, but it's similar to other holidays like Mother's Day or Thanksgiving where it shouldn't be the one day in the year that love, appreciation, and giving thanks are reserved for. Life is greater than these one-day-a-year moments, and we should let the people in our lives feel special on the unnoticed days. Throw them for a loop, take them by surprise, and remind them constantly how necessary they are to you.

Free

"She is free in her wildness, she is a wanderess, a drop of free water. She knows nothing of borders and cares nothing for rules or customs. 'Time' for her isn't something to fight against. Her life flows clean, with passion, like fresh water."

Free.

The phrase "to be free" is a loaded statement. What does it mean to be free, and have all of us found our freedom? Most of us are fortunate enough to have grown up in a country founded on democracy and freedom, but to be declared free by social standards is, in my opinion, very different from feeling free. In our every day lives we run into a lot of situations where our freedom may feel conflicted whether it be from social pressure, peer pressure, etc. Before we decide or act on something, we almost go through a laundry list of questions we ask ourselves, such as: What will other people think if I do this? How might this decision or action impact myself and/or the people around me? Is this the best choice I could be making? The opinion of others almost weighs just as importantly on our final decision or action as our own opinion. As humans, we tend to see approval from others and we love asking other people, "What would you do?". But to be free means that you are held back by none of these things. To be free means that you always look within first and ask yourself: What do I want? What will make me happy? Is this the choice I want to make? Will this choice lead me where I want to go? How will this decision impact my future? Sure, it's great to ask for a second opinion or to consult a few people on the big decisions in life because yes, other people may have knowledge that you do not. But at the end of the day, no one will care more for your well-being but yourself and in a world where we have been given the chance for freedom, we should wholeheartedly embrace it.

Acceptance

"Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward. If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down."

Acceptance.

Despite my blog being a personal style blog, I like to share a lot of my own thoughts and reflections with you guys. Whether you think so or not, the topics I choose for each post are actually deeply rooted in how an outfit makes me feel. I spend {sometimes} hours picking out or coming up with the perfect quote to be the anchor of my post before I write the supplementary words below. It's not secret that I love fashion, but I also love words - I love thinking, reflecting, and creating. Like how most people journal, I share my thoughts here with you guys. And for me, I can look back and see how I have grown and changed over the years. I started this blog back in college, and my sense of self-identity has changed drastically since then which I think is reflected in both the way I dress myself and the words in which I express myself. They tell you that going into college you have no idea who you are or who you want to become, and for the most part I can't help but agree. I had some semblance of an idea of the things I liked going into college, but it took a lot of trial and error before I found what I loved...and it took many years for me to truly learn how to accept myself, love myself, let go of the things that weighed me down, and boldly move forward. I almost think that the greatest growth happens post-college, when you're given the chance to really become independent without the everyday pressure of feeling like there's a need to conform. There's something beautiful about finding yourself and knowing that you're on your path in life.

Between the Shores

"Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls."

Between the shores.

A fluid love - one that does not judge nor discriminate, one that is not bound by rules or the confines of society, a love that moves and is not stagnant. I think, as a people, we've forgotten what this is. Human kind, separated by oceans and borders, should be a fluid species -- one that runs like the waters of the sea. Within each of us lives a soul, and souls were made to love one another.
