Blue Steel

"Sometimes I'm terrified of my heart; of its constant hunger for whatever it is it wants.
The way it stops and starts."
{Edgar Allan Poe}

Discovering new favorites.

Grey. It is slowly making it's way up the ladder to become one of my new favorite colors for this season. Don't get me wrong, I've always loved the color grey, but it's mostly been a color that I've owned in cardigans and sweaters; it's been awhile since I've owned a grey pant because I feel like it's been awhile since grey denim has really been in. I don't think grey ever really left the scene, but for awhile everyone really focused on true blue denim washes and blacks + the ever-present chic-knee-rip. However, this season, I'm super excited for monotonous outfits in pairings other than black on black and white on white. I'm looking forward to greys on greys and camels on camels. It's not quite that time yet since I'm just beginning to break out the sweaters, but I've already been getting a lot of wear out of these stone grey skinnies that I recently added to my wardrobe. What color trends are you looking forward to this season?

"I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart.
I am, I am, I am."
{Sylvia Plath}

Change is often something that we, as humans, do not like -- we fear it, we have trouble adapting to it, and we struggle with the unknown. Yet, the change in seasons always seems to be a welcome change. This week has been a glorious transition over to fall weather, and everyday I wake up excited to throw on a sweater or an extra cardigan layer with my outfit. It's also the perfect temperature to be mixing in your fall dresses because it's still warm enough for bare legs and booties. I swung by AĆ©ropostale this past weekend and picked up this little number, and if you follow me on Instagram, you'll know that I'm just a tad obsessed. I love the print and I love the silhouette, and it really is the perfect fall palette dress. If you do end up picking up this dress, do note that the neckline is originally designed as a split neck -- I added an extra snap button to mine and modified it to become a crew neck, which I prefer with the already-open shoulder cut-outs. Needless to say, I felt 110% ready for fall in this outfit, paired with my trusty taupe booties and my newest Janessa Leone fedora. Plus, guess what I have in hand? You got it -- #PSL #FTW.

"All in all, it was a never to be forgotten summer -- one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going -- one of those summers  which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfect as anything can come in this world."
{L.M. Montgomery}

Here's one last summer look for you all! I wore this pairing to the Yuna Yang SS '15 show during NYFW before I headed off to enjoy a night of style with Lulu*s. This top is making me a true repeat offender because it's one of those perfect basic black tops that is still so understatedly beautiful and totally wearable all year round. I'm looking forward to throwing a black leather jacket over this with some layered gold necklaces for an easy but chic black on black pairing. This past weekend was the first weekend where I finally felt that fall chill in the air even throughout the hottest hours of the day. So with that, I'm signing off on summer with this #ootd!

"I don't ask you to love me always like this, but I ask you to remember.
Somewhere inside of me there will always be the person I am tonight."
{F. Scott Fitzgerald}

Finding balance.

The last week has been super hectic for me with busy season hitting at work and juggling events for fashion week. At times it's been so draining that I give serious kudos to people who attend more events than I do while also working a normal nine-to-five job. There were super late nights commuting home to New Jersey after evening shows and events in the city, but honestly I wouldn't trade it for a few more hours of shut eye. Flashback to 2012 when I first started Refined Couture, NYFW was purely a dream. It's so easy to measure your own success through the accomplishments of others, but as the old saying goes, you can't compare your chapter 3 to someone else's chapter 25 {or something along those lines}. In due time, you will find your own successes and reach your highest goals so long as you carry on. I used to think being successful was getting invited to ____'s show at fashion week and having x number of followers on Instagram, but thinking about where I started and where I've come, it truly amazes me and makes me feel ever so thankful to have all of you here with me. I've made friends and found a community I never would have known had it not been for this little corner of the interweb and all of you, so here's to continuing this journey and taking you all along for the adventures to come! Sending much love to all of you!

P.S. This is literally the most comfortable jumpsuit of my life I'm pretty sure this is what it feels like to wear a onesie as a baby. If they've come out with silk onesies, this is that but for get on it cause it's on sale and I'm obsessed! Can't wait to transition this to fall ;)

Golden Ticket

"Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.
Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."
{Roald Dahl}

Originality. It's your golden ticket in the world of fashion. Yes, a huge part of fashion is drawing inspiration, but turning inspiration into something original, something innovative, something that breathes that perfect breath of fresh air is the key to success and also the key to respect. I've given this a lot of thought, and as a personal style blogger who is attached at the hip to her iPhone {but mostly just to Instagram} I've come to find that sometimes it becomes so easy to lose yourself: to lose your perspective, to forget your roots, to become someone you really aren't; it's easy to conform instead of transform. It's quite easy -- just scroll through your Instagram and see where you started, look at where you've gone, and evaluate where you stand. Are you being who you really are? If not, do a little soul searching. It's never too late to embark on a journey to rediscover yourself. Once you do, I think you'll find that people will love you for who you are; they'll recognize you for your talent and for your perspective -- don't worry. Press on and one day your time will come.
