Ikat

"While gazing at myself from yourself, I was beautiful."
{Dejan Stojanovic}

I've been very into things with more of an 80's or 90's vibe lately, which goes without saying as many of our current trends were trending around 15-30 years ago. I've mentioned before that my mother has always been one of my greatest influences when it comes to personal style and a love for fashion. Growing up, I often received comments from my friends about how stylish my mom was and how un-momly {not a word} she dressed. Like mother like daughter, my mom also loves hanging onto sentimental pieces and this skirt fell into the category of sentiment. She's owned this skirt probably for longer than I've been alive or maybe just as long, and when she dug it out of the closet for me the other day, I was smitten. Digging through my mom's old clothes is one thousand times better than vintage finds in thrift stores because I know that the love in each garment is a love passed on from her.

Billow

"Develop interests in life as you see it;
in people, things, literature, music --
the world is so rich,
simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls, and interesting people."
{Henry Miller}

It's easy to forget to embrace life every day -- to take the chance on doing something you've always wanted to do, to jump on opportunities that come your way, to prioritize your own life before your work life, to do things today and not tomorrow, that right now may be the only now so you shouldn't wait until the next time. The world has so much to offer, but we often get cornered into the tiny world we've created for ourselves thinking that this world is the world. But it's not. I'm definitely guilty of it -- I constantly joke about how I'm all about that grandma life: I enjoy going home, curling up with a good book or catching up on my favorite TV shows; I get too lazy to go out of my way to do things with friends because the introvert in me just wants to stay in instead of go out. But the world is so rich and it is teeming with knowledge and experience and culture. Do what you love, make time in your schedule, find energy to do more, and don't regret the could have beens or would have beens. Life is fleeting but life is also beautiful so live in the now.

Fit & Flare

"It was rather beautiful:
the way he put her insecurities to sleep.
The way he dove into her eyes and starved all the fears
and tasted all the dreams she kept coiled beneath her bones."
{Christopher Poindexter}

On hot summer days, dresses are my go-to. They're easy, they're breezy, and a good dress makes its own statement without much accessorizing. I'm a huge fan of the shift dress silhouette, and this one hits the mark. It's a little bit more feminine with the drop waist, flared and ruffled hem and a subtle geometric stripe. Paired with a bright white summer bag and my favorite black sandals, it's a quick outfit to throw on and head out the door without wasting a minute.

Girl From Ipanema

"Tall and tan and young and lovely; The girl from Ipanema goes walking;
And when she passes, I smile, but she doesn't see. She just doesn't see.
How can I tell her I love her; Yes, I would give my heart gladly;
But each day as she walks to the sea; She looks straight ahead, not at me."
{Frank Sinatra, Girl From Ipanema}

I have fond memories of the song Girl From Ipanema. When I was in high school I was part of the chorus and I also joined the select women's choir that met early in the morning before school began. For one of our performances we sang Girl From Ipanema {choreographed and all} and I immediately fell in love with the song. I imagined this young, beautiful girl walking down a dirt road, lined with palm trees and seaside cottages, adorned in a beautiful dress, oblivious to the adoring looks of all the men she passed, floating through her own little world. The second I put on this outfit I was immediately transported back to that song, imagining myself taking a dreamy stroll to the seaside in the beautiful city of Ipanema.

Gently

"I fell in love the way you fall asleep:
slowly,
then all at once."
{John Greene, The Fault in Our Stars}

Wedding season is in full swing which means wedding guest attire is once again on our minds. I wore this outfit to attend not a wedding but an engagement celebration {?} for a family friend. With summer and wedding attire, I personally have difficulty finding a dress I like that isn't white. Though a white dress wouldn't have been inappropriate for the affair that I attended, I've been thinking about wedding attire for a wedding I'll be attending later in the summer. I think this dress is a perfect alternative to a little white dress in this pretty shell pink color that is both summery and just a hint romantic. Paired with minimalist pearl accents and gold accessories, particularly my trusty lace-up gold sandals, keeps this dress from looking too matronly. In the words of my father when I stepped out of my room: "so fashional". No, that is not a word, but you know what? I think I'll start using it.

Fashionally yours,
RC
